The Week Ahead…

19 games dot the NCAA schedule this week beginning Thursday, the most this season. Will all 19 be played? We shall see. It’s a relatively light week for our players at Yale with exams approaching, Reading days began Monday and the exam period is from Dec. 11-18. Due to Ivy/Yale rules, we’ll let those enrolled focus on finishing the semester strong and catch back up with everyone after exams are over on the 19th.

Some D-I men’s program are scheduling DIII teams to help fill their out schedule. Bowling Green and Lake Superior State have both played Adrian College, and this weekend MSU-Mankato will play MSOE–Milwaukee School of Engineering. Minnesota played Hamline last year in an exhibition game winning 9-0 and outshooting Hamline 47-13. You had one of the best in DI play one of the best in DIII. One has to wonder how much DI teams are going to get out of playing these type of games, COVID and all. Adrian College Head Coach Shawn Skelly did tell me this morning he is actively seeking DI teams to schedule if he can get them. We’ll keep an eye on this.

The last DI conference to make a season scheduling announcement–the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance–has announced it will play a modified season schedule beginning in January. You can read the official press release HERE. Schedules will be released by each NEWHA league member soon.

Catching Up With Junior Forward Maya Kerfoot…

Parents, you’re going to want to pay attention to this. Last week I had the chance to catch up via Zoom with one of our Junior Forwards, Maya Kerfoot, about her experience at Yale this Fall. Maya is from Mississauga, Ontario and played for the Mississauga in the PWHL before Yale. We talked about everything from academics/life on campus, to crossing the US/CAN border in late August, and what the big takeaway was for her now that the semester is winding down. You can watch the interview HERE.

Yale’s Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning

If you thought anyone who attends Yale doesn’t need academic support, you would be sorely mistaken. As in hockey, you want to get better at your game, you chat with your coaches, put together a plan, and put it into action. Same goes for academics. Enter Yale’s Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. Yale University established the Center for Teaching and Learning in 2014 to support students and faculty across the campus. In alignment with President Peter Salovey’s goal of creating a “more unified Yale,” the new center consolidated the various teaching, tutoring, writing and technology-enabled learning programs distributed across the University.

This is the place if you need help. Tutoring in just about any class, help writing a paper, study groups–it has it all. As much as the students are supported, so to are their instructors. You can check out all of their services HERE. It’s quite impressive to say the least.

Weekend Scores

COVID strikes again… Not all games on the schedule posted Friday were played. COVID protocol caused the postponements of three series: Minnesota/Wisconsin, MSU-Mankato/Bemidji, and RIT/Mercyhurst.

How The Top 10 fared… Teams in the top 10 went 8-2-1 this weekend, the two losses going to Clarkson and Boston University at the hands of Colgate and New Hampshire respectively.

Overtime Play… There was one 3-on-3 overtime period played on Sunday between Syracuse and Penn State with multiple point-blank chances both ways. Hard to argue 3-on-3 isn’t entertaining hockey to watch. Be sure to watch the highlights!

Program Update…

With everyone gone from campus and at home, there is not a whole lot going on. Our players continue to train, get ice-time when the can and are allowed. The admissions process for our class of 2021 commits has been under way and should be finishing up soon. Once all players have been accepted and confirmed, Mark will announce the class. While NCAA rules prohibit us from naming names, let’s just say we’re very excited about this ’21 group. We’ll also be adding 5 new players from the class of ’20 who chose to defer their enrollment due to COVID this year.

Recruiting Blog Page Coming Soon…

To date, we’ve posted quite a bit about recruiting covering several different areas. We’ve also received quite a bit of feedback on those posts–all positive I’m happy to say. But there have been a lot of questions from coaches and parents alike, ‘where can I find xyz’ type questions. So to help, we’re putting together a ‘Recruiting Resource’ page together. Think one-stop-shop for the nitty-gritty on all things related to the topic of recruiting–NCAA Rules, documents, and other links to helpful resources to help guide anyone through the process. Once it out, we’ll let you know, so be on the lookout!
