Weekend Scores

COVID strikes again… Not all games on the schedule posted Friday were played. COVID protocol caused the postponements of three series: Minnesota/Wisconsin, MSU-Mankato/Bemidji, and RIT/Mercyhurst.

How The Top 10 fared… Teams in the top 10 went 8-2-1 this weekend, the two losses going to Clarkson and Boston University at the hands of Colgate and New Hampshire respectively.

Overtime Play… There was one 3-on-3 overtime period played on Sunday between Syracuse and Penn State with multiple point-blank chances both ways. Hard to argue 3-on-3 isn’t entertaining hockey to watch. Be sure to watch the highlights!

Program Update…

With everyone gone from campus and at home, there is not a whole lot going on. Our players continue to train, get ice-time when the can and are allowed. The admissions process for our class of 2021 commits has been under way and should be finishing up soon. Once all players have been accepted and confirmed, Mark will announce the class. While NCAA rules prohibit us from naming names, let’s just say we’re very excited about this ’21 group. We’ll also be adding 5 new players from the class of ’20 who chose to defer their enrollment due to COVID this year.

Recruiting Blog Page Coming Soon…

To date, we’ve posted quite a bit about recruiting covering several different areas. We’ve also received quite a bit of feedback on those posts–all positive I’m happy to say. But there have been a lot of questions from coaches and parents alike, ‘where can I find xyz’ type questions. So to help, we’re putting together a ‘Recruiting Resource’ page together. Think one-stop-shop for the nitty-gritty on all things related to the topic of recruiting–NCAA Rules, documents, and other links to helpful resources to help guide anyone through the process. Once it out, we’ll let you know, so be on the lookout!

Until Next Time…

Sifters…

-Yale Players To Compete & IIHF… The Swiss and German women’s national teams will meet for 3-games December 15-19 in Fussen, Germany. Former Yale standout and 2014 Olympian Phoebe Staenz will suit-up for the Swiss and current Junior Yale Defensemen, Tabea Botthof will face-off against her for the Germans. The IIHF announced on Nov. 18 the cancellation of several tournaments including women’s Olympic qualification events. More to come how this will impact NCAA players. You can read more on the cancelled events HERE.

-Not Much DIII Hockey… Most of the hockey being played this year has been between DI teams with the exception of a few DIII teams. And we do mean a few, 2 to be exact–Trine University and Adrian College of the NCHA are the only DIII women’s or men’s to play this year so far. As the Ivy league has cancelled its hockey season, so too have a host of NCAA Division III conferences like the NESCAC. But there are some waiting until early January to start up. What’s interesting is that DIII schools have not had a recruiting ban during COVID at all. Coaches have been able to go off-campus and evaluate players. USCHO.com had a good article HERE on what DIII conferences are still waiting to see if they can play.

-High School Hockey in Minnesota… The Minnesota State High School League or MSHSL, which governs scholastic high school sports laid out a plan for Winter sports to begin yesterday. Even if there are extensions of COVID related shutdowns, high school hockey looks like they can adjust. We heard back in October that Nov. 30 was the original start date for HS teams. Now, a recent executive order from the MN Governor has paused all HS and Youth sports until Dec. 18. Three start dates have been proposed, Dec. 21, Jan. 4, or Jan. 18.

-May Quiet Period Relief… NCAA DI and DIII coaches met earlier this week via zoom. Much discussion was spent on a solution to the DI women’s hockey quiet period should the NCAA cancel its temporary COVID recruiting ban April 15. Our DI coaching body is considering asking the NCAA for relief from its self-imposed rule. The May quiet period keeps coaches on their campuses and not able to evaluate players from the Monday before the AHCA Convention until June 1. That would give NCAA coaches roughly 3 weeks to evaluate players off their campus before the June 15 official communication start time. Not exactly ideal recruiting conditions. We’ll keep you posted on any developments.

Yale is #1 When it Comes to Student-Athlete Graduation Success Rate…

Each year the NCAA publishes a report on how often students graduate at each particular institution – otherwise known as the GSR or Graduation Success Rate. The Graduation Rates Institution Report gives graduation information about the most recent six-year graduating class of students and student-athletes who entered as freshmen in 2013-14. The graduation rate (percent) is based on a comparison of the number (N) of students who entered a college or university and the number of those who graduated within six years.

The women’s hockey program had a GSR of 100% along with 19 other Yale varsity athletic teams. You can read the full release HERE.

Kemp, Yale men’s player begins pro career after signing with the Edmonton Oilers.

And speaking of getting it done… kudos to men’s ice hockey player Phil Kemp who signed with the Edmonton Oilers this past week and will report to Vansby in Sweden. He will not only start his pro career this week, but finish his degree this Spring as well. You can read more on Kemp’s signing HERE.

Until next time…
